In May, I was lucky enough to get a private tour of the de Young Museum’s latest exhibit: “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier.” I didn’t know much about the beloved fashion designer, aside from his famous costumes for Madonna, but I found the exhibit fascinating, and I learned so much about Gaultier. Sure, he’s provocative and really pushes sexuality as a theme in his designs. But that was really secondary to how beautiful and glamorously intricate his work is. You can’t help but walk away with a huge sense of respect for his amazing use of materials and just how crazy creative he is. Here are some snapshots of my favorite details from the show. Click on each thumbnail to view them at a larger size; the details are really quite amazing. If you live in San Francisco, definitely head over to the de Young before the exhibit closes.
